The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but within Together lies a intense examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
